I Believe…
That it makes perfect sense to hope and live as though there is an utterly good and loving God who will redeem everyone and triumph over evil in the end, whether or not you believe it at any given time.
That such a God cannot and does not cause or allow the horrors of life, but rather suffers the consequences of people’s free and frequent bad choices together with us, according to the natural limitations of love, which is God’s singular essence.
That, as far as we are concerned, God lives with us in time, responding to changing circumstances in accordance with God’s unchanging character. That God speaks to people in many ways, and quite frequently uses the Bible, in spite of (or perhaps because of) its quite apparent imperfections, to speak to those of us who follow Jesus.
That loving relationships are the ultimate value in the Universe.
That God’s love for us (i.e. costly grace), properly understood, is the best and most reliable motivation for us to sacrificially love both ourselves and one another.
That true democracy is the key to social justice, and that sweeping campaign finance reform in the USA is the key to promoting true democracy, both here and around the world.
That corporations are essentially and inevitably irresponsible, and therefore must be restrained by truly democratic governments.
That marriage is the best option for gay people who are not prone to celibacy.
That misogyny must be recognized and confronted and eliminated.
That abortion is a personal and social tragedy which should not be outlawed, but which should instead be eliminated by the alleviation of its root causes.
That the greater responsibility for relationships across race, class, age, and gender boundaries always lies with the side that is most powerful and privileged.
That certain ideas and attitudes are objectively superior to others, and that aspects of every culture that are toxic and therefore unworthy of protection.
That population control and the development of a stable, sustainable economy is the only hope for widespread and ongoing peace and harmony on this finite planet.
That hardly anyone reads this blog.
